Intent

The intent of our English curriculum is to foster a lifelong love of language, literature, and communication in every child. Through a rich and diverse range of texts, purposeful writing opportunities, and engaging spoken language activities, we aim to empower pupils to become confident, articulate, and imaginative communicators.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop fluent, expressive readers who can comprehend, interpret, and enjoy a wide variety of texts.

  • Cultivate skilled writers who can adapt their style for different audiences and purposes, using grammar and vocabulary with precision.

  • Encourage articulate speakers and attentive listeners who can express ideas clearly and respectfully in a range of contexts.

  • Promote cultural awareness and empathy through exposure to literature from different times, places, and perspectives.

  • Build resilience and independence by nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and a growth mindset in language learning.

We believe that English is not only a subject but a gateway to understanding the world and shaping one’s place within it. Our curriculum ensures that all children, regardless of background, are equipped with the literacy skills they need to thrive academically and socially.

Implementation

To realise our curriculum intent, English is delivered through a carefully sequenced and inclusive programme that builds knowledge, skills, and confidence over time. Our approach ensures that all pupils—regardless of background or starting point—are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential.

Key implementation strategies include:

  • Reading for Pleasure and Purpose Pupils engage with a wide range of high-quality texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and culturally diverse literature. Whole-class reading, guided reading, and independent reading are embedded across all year groups to develop fluency, comprehension, and a love of books.

  • Writing with Intent and Impact Writing is taught through meaningful contexts that inspire creativity and purpose. Pupils learn to plan, draft, revise, and publish their work, with explicit instruction in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Writing units are linked to core texts and cross-curricular themes to deepen understanding.

  • Speaking and Listening Across the Curriculum Oracy is woven into daily practice through structured discussions, drama, presentations, and collaborative learning. Pupils are taught to express themselves clearly, listen actively, and respond thoughtfully, building confidence and social-emotional skills.

  • Progression and Assessment Skills and knowledge are revisited and built upon through a spiral curriculum model. Formative and summative assessments inform planning and ensure that teaching is responsive to pupil needs. Regular moderation supports consistency and high standards

  •  Inclusive and Adaptive Teaching Differentiated instruction, targeted interventions, and the use of visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic strategies ensure that all learners—including those with SEND and EAL—can access and succeed in English.

  • Professional Development and Collaboration Staff receive ongoing training in evidence-based literacy practices, including phonics, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. Collaborative planning and peer support foster a shared vision and continuous improvement.

Through this robust and reflective implementation, we aim to cultivate confident, literate individuals who are equipped to thrive in school and beyond.

Impact

The impact of our English curriculum is evident in the confident, articulate, and literate learners we nurture. Through consistent, high-quality teaching and a rich variety of learning experiences, pupils develop the skills and mindset needed to thrive both academically and personally.

We measure impact through:

  • Pupil Outcomes Children make strong progress in reading, writing, and spoken language, as evidenced by internal assessments, national benchmarks, and moderated work. They demonstrate increasing fluency, accuracy, and sophistication in their use of language.

  • Reading Fluency and Enjoyment Pupils read widely and often, developing a genuine love of literature. They can discuss texts with insight, make connections across genres and cultures, and apply their reading skills across the curriculum.

  • Writing Mastery and Creativity Children write with purpose, clarity, and imagination. They understand how to adapt tone, structure, and vocabulary for different audiences and contexts, and take pride in crafting and improving their work.

  • Confident Communication Pupils speak clearly and listen actively. They engage in thoughtful discussion, present ideas with confidence, and show empathy and respect in collaborative settings.

  • Equity and Inclusion All learners—including those with SEND, EAL, or disadvantaged backgrounds—make meaningful progress. Targeted support and inclusive practices ensure that every child feels seen, heard, and empowered.

  • Personal Development Beyond academic success, pupils grow as reflective thinkers and expressive individuals. They develop resilience, curiosity, and a sense of identity through their engagement with language and literature.

  • Curriculum Reflection and Growth Regular review of pupil work, teacher feedback, and assessment data informs ongoing refinement of the curriculum. Staff collaborate to ensure consistency, ambition, and responsiveness to pupil needs.

Ultimately, our English curriculum equips children with the literacy skills, confidence, and cultural awareness they need to succeed in the next stage of their education—and to flourish as thoughtful, articulate members of society
