Teaching Phonics at Orion Scotts Park

We use Read Write Inc., a systematic and rigorous phonics programme, to teach children to read and write with confidence. Read Write Inc. is a proven approach that ensures all children develop strong foundational literacy skills from the very beginning of their school journey.

How Read Write Inc. Works

Children are taught to read by learning the sounds (phonemes) that letters make, rather than just letter names. They are then taught to blend these sounds together to read words. This approach enables children to decode unfamiliar words independently and builds reading fluency quickly and effectively.

Lessons are fast-paced, engaging, and interactive, with daily phonics sessions that include reading, writing, and spelling activities. Children work in small, ability-matched groups, ensuring they receive teaching that is precisely tailored to their current level and can progress at the right pace for them.

Regular assessments ensure that children are placed in the appropriate group and receiving the support they need to succeed. Our skilled staff deliver Read Write Inc. with fidelity, using the programme's proven methods to ensure consistency and high-quality teaching across the school.
