Homework
Every week, your child’s year group will set homework.
Homework at Orion Scotts Park
We believe that homework should reinforce and extend classroom learning while fostering independence and a love of learning. Our homework offer is designed to support children's progress whilst being manageable for families.
Reading
We use Accelerated Reader to support our reading programme. All children have access to banded and levelled books according to their Accelerated Reader score, ensuring every child reads material that is both challenging and pitched at the correct level to develop their reading fluency and comprehension. We actively promote the use of real books to enhance children's love of reading and foster a lifelong enjoyment of literature.
Each child has a reading journal where parents, supporting adults, and older children should record when reading takes place at home. This enables school staff to identify and prioritise additional reading support for children who are not reading regularly at home, ensuring no child falls behind.
In addition to daily reading, children are provided with a weekly reading comprehension activity to develop their understanding and analytical skills. Once children have completed a book, they also have the opportunity to complete online reading quizzes through Accelerated Reader, which assess their comprehension and track their progress.
Mathematics
We use MathsWhizz to support the teaching of mathematics at home. This adaptive online resource tailors activities to each child's individual ability, ensuring they receive appropriately challenging work that consolidates their learning and helps them progress at their own pace. Children are encouraged to complete regular sessions on MathsWhizz to develop fluency and confidence in mathematics.
All children also have access to Times Tables Rock Stars, an engaging online platform that enables them to practise and master their multiplication tables in a fun and interactive way.
Spelling
Children are sent home spellings to learn each week, matched to the curriculum words for their year group. We encourage children to practise these words regularly at home with the support of parents and carers. Children are tested on their spellings weekly, helping to reinforce their learning and build spelling confidence.
We value the partnership between home and school, and encourage parents to contact their child's class teacher if they have any questions or concerns about homework expectations.
